2022 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Bennedict Mathurin
A look at his strengths, weaknesses, and what to expect
Strengths:
athleticism
finishing
foul-drawing
shooting
Weaknesses:
lapses in defensive focus
Bennedict Mathurin’s 6-7 frame packs a lot of punch. His powerful athleticism is evident in his eye-popping blocks and internet-breaking dunks. He attacks the rim with a lot of force, often drawing fouls and/or finishing through contact, making him a real weapon in transition. Per barttorvik, he’s shot 63.8% at the rim this year on 117 attempts. Arguably Mathurin’s greatest strength though is his shooting. As a freshman, he shot 42% from deep on 3.5 attempts per game and he’s upped the volume (6.1 per game) and difficulty level this season while maintaining an efficient 37% accuracy. He’s got great shot versatility, showing the ability to hit 3s both off movement and off the dribble. He has all the indicators of a master marksman and the fact that he’s shown this with less than ideal spacing at Arizona make it easy for me to buy him as a dangerous shooter in the NBA (my 3pt model agrees). Mathurin’s been a mixed bag on the other end of the floor. He’s had some great possessions as a point-of-attack defender and has shown some anticipation off the ball as well. HOWEVER, he has more lapses in defensive focus than I would like often getting caught ball watching or flat-footed/upright.
